Problem - Manual Handling is slow with only small items or containers being able to be loaded. Slow loading results in less collections possible per vehicle per day resulting in poor utilisation of the collection vehicle. Often larger items require 2 people to be lifted which adds further cost to the operation. Manual handling also makes it difficult to fill the vertical volume of the collection vehicle again reducing the efficiency of the collection. Risk of injury cannot be ignored with common risks including lifting heavy or awkward objects, repetitive strain injuries, back problems, pulling pallet trucks over uneven ground and up / down gradients or falls from the vehicle during loading. In summary operations using manual handling are generally inefficient, pose risk of injury and are often only used due to the low capital investment requirement.
